Artificial Intelligence (AI): how it can assist you with your work

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is an area of information technology focused on developing computer systems and programs that are able to perform tasks that require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, perception, decision-making, and solving problems. In other words, AI refers to the process of giving computers the ability to “think” and “learn” in a human‑like way.

This technology is based on mathematical algorithms and models that allow machines to process large quantities of data, and then make decisions based upon the patterns and trends identified.

In general, AI is now being applied to a wide range of applications, such as for virtual assistants, recommendation systems, medical diagnosis, and self‑driving vehicles. Over time, it has been demonstrated in a variety of fields that AI is a powerful tool for improving efficiency, precision, decision-making, and personalization, and it continues to evolve and improve as new algorithms and technologies are developed.

There are many reasons why using artificial intelligence tools in your work could be very beneficial. Instead of seeing AI as a replacement, we should think of it as something that will be assisting us with some of the tasks we perform in the future, depending on the type of work involved.

The main benefits that artificial intelligence can give you

Learning how to make use of the artificial intelligence tool that represents the best fit with your own tasks can make your work much easier, while also helping you optimize your use of resources. Here are some of the basic benefits that AI can contribute to your daily work:

  1. Task automation: AI can be used to handle repetitive, monotonous tasks, so that humans can remain focused on types of work that are more complex and strategic.

  2. Efficiency: compared to humans, AI tools can analyze large quantities of data in a much more efficient and precise way, and this can lead to quicker decision-making that is also based on a larger body of information.

  3. Personalization: AI can help personalize the user experience, based on individual needs and preferences.

  4. Predictions and decision-making: use of AI can help predict future results and events, which can be very useful in a variety of fields ranging from finance to healthcare.

  5. Machine learning: an artificial intelligence system is a computer model that can learn and improve quickly as more information is fed into it, thanks to its capacity for high-volume data processing.

Industries that are already investing in artificial intelligence

According to a study performed by Deloitte on implementation of artificial intelligence in business, 82% of companies that are investing in AI are seeing significant financial benefits, with a median return on investment of 17%.

AI can also help improve operations and provide a better customer experience. For example, Netflix used AI to improve search results, to reduce the frustration its customers were sometimes feeling when trying to find something to watch. This allowed the company to save $1 billion per year by using AI to personalize suggestions, which reduced its potential loss of subscribers who were having trouble finding contents they were interested in viewing.

Traditional industries and startups are also using AI to make their production more efficient, improving repetitive processes and allowing their employees to remain focused on more complex and profitable tasks.

Healthcare and life sciences companies are also investing in AI, and in fact, advances are already being seen in fields as diverse as radiology and hospital claim management, demonstrating that AI can offer many advantages in the healthcare industry. AI has the potential to create substantial value in relation to medical services, such as through early detection of certain diseases such as breast cancer, where 100% detection has been achieved based on a single image, before the cancer has had a chance to develop.  However, up until now this has only occurred in laboratories, and more time is still needed before these techniques will be integrated into clinical practice by doctors with training in the use of artificial intelligence to assist with detection.

In summary, artificial intelligence tools have arrived as a way to make burdensome tasks easier for us, and they can also create new job positions and career opportunities, in areas such as computer programming, algorithm development, and supervision and maintenance of AI systems. In addition, for many types of work AI is able to improve efficiency and productivity, which may lead to greater demand for highly trained and more specialized employees.

In general, the impact that AI will have on jobs will largely depend upon the types of work involved and the ways in which AI can be applied to them. Clearly, work that requires interpersonal skills, such as those applied by psychologists, customer service specialists, and caregivers, as well as jobs in areas involving creativity or complex decision-making, will continue to be seen as essential and irreplaceable.
