  • The company will intensify actions to raise awareness about the climate emergency and explain its role in risk management, prevention, and reduction.
  • In November, MAPFRE will present the Climate change and the insurance industry report, prepared by MAPFRE Economics, to analyze losses deriving from climate events and how to reduce the insurance protection gap.
  • Antonio Huertas: “Our environmental strategy is to progressively raise the bar, and our commitment to, sustainability in a straightforward manner, supporting society in a fair energy transition for people.”
  • In 2024, MAPFRE reduced its global carbon footprint by 25%, which is key to achieving Net Zero status by 2050.

MAPFRE will actively participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30)—to be held in Belém Pará, Brazil from November 10-21—to discuss the impact of climate change and biodiversity loss and to explain MAPFRE’s role as a key player in risk management, prevention, and reduction.

Over the coming months, the company will intensify awareness-raising actions to explain how climate change is affecting the insurance industry, how it integrates the climate change variable into the business, how it reduces the Group’s environmental footprint, and which of its projects boost the circular economy.

Antonio Huertas, chairman and CEO of MAPFRE, reiterated that “our progressively raise the bar, and our commitment to, sustainability in a straightforward manner, supporting society in a fair energy transition for people, that is, to help and support companies to transform and continue creating wealth in an increasingly sustainable and environmentally friendly way.”

Within the framework of COP30, the company will organize meetings with employees, experts, and other stakeholders to raise awareness of the consequences of global warming, as well as to reflect on the most pressing environmental problems and offer guidelines for incorporating small habits into everyday life that help mitigate them and motivate people to halt the deterioration of the planet.

MAPFRE will also participate in different events organized at the Casa del Seguro (Insurance House), a sustainable space promoted by the National Confederation of Insurance Companies (CNseg – Confederación Nacional de Compañías de Seguros), to position the insurance industry as a key player in providing solutions aimed at protecting the most vulnerable countries and reflect on the importance of sustainable finance, resilient infrastructure, and climate intelligence, among other aspects.

It will participate alongside other leading insurance companies in a conference to analyze the sector’s barriers and opportunities in adapting to climate change and to share best practices aimed at increasing the resilience of the most vulnerable groups. It will also present the Climate change and the insurance industry report, prepared by MAPFRE Economics, which analyzes losses deriving from climatic events, insurance protection gaps, disaster protection mechanisms, the role of reinsurance, and securitization through catastrophe bonds.

Net Zero by 2050

The fight against climate change is part of MAPFRE’s Global Corporate Sustainability Plan, which includes commitments to decarbonize the economy and promote a fair energy transition model.

MAPFRE reduced its global carbon footprint by 25% in 2024, as a result of its efforts to continue making progress in reducing energy consumption and decarbonizing its operations. In order to achieve zero net emissions globally by 2050, MAPFRE is developing products and solutions with sustainable criteria, promoting agreements and taking on a series of environmental commitments in relation to risk underwriting and investment for carbon-intensive sectors.
