SEAT and MAPFRE join forces for safe mobility

Both companies will explore safe mobility initiatives to contribute to the goal of zero traffic victims.

The agreement also includes the analysis of safety applied to new urban mobility solutions.

SEAT and MAPFRE will work together on creating value for the customer in the connected car.

SEAT and MAPFRE have signed a collaboration agreement in Spain for the development of new mobility under safety and accident prevention parameters. With this partnership, and as part of their commitment to the goal of zero traffic victims, both companies will implement initiatives to minimise accident rates. In addition, they will promote ways of collaborating on safety when driving, as well as on the use of new forms of mobility and the creation of new solutions linked to the ‘connected car’.

According to data from the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), in 2019 there were 1,098 casualties on Spanish roads, a figure that is still far from the goal of reducing the number of victims in traffic accidents to zero. This fact, together with the consolidation of new urban micromobility solutions, has prompted the collaboration agreement between SEAT and MAPFRE with the aim of contributing to safer, more efficient and more sustainable mobility.

Christian Stein, Managing Director of Communication and Institutional Relations of SEAT and the Volkswagen Group in Spain, emphasised that “80% of urban trips are under 5 kilometres and it is our responsibility to contribute to making this new urban mobility sustainable and safe. The collaboration with strategic partners in this area, such as MAPFRE, enables us to jointly and swiftly offer new solutions to improve people’s everyday mobility.”

Furthermore, José Manuel Corral, MAPFRE’s General Director of Business and Clients, said that “we are working intensely with the idea of being ready to manage the various new mobility business models. MAPFRE aims to be a relevant global player in close contact with manufacturers, as a leading reliable partner, and to contribute to the development of this new value proposal with innovative insurance solutions. In this sense, for MAPFRE, being able to develop these projects together with such an important manufacturer as SEAT is a matter of considerable satisfaction.”

Road safety in the use of new forms of mobility

Urban mobility is a strategic area for SEAT and therefore both companies will explore ways of collaborating on safety in the use of new urban mobility solutions. To this end, through CESVIMAP, MAPFRE’s Road Safety and Experimentation Centre, an analysis of the micromobility products developed by SEAT will be carried out in order to obtain information on their safety level, as well as their accident rate, recharging and associated risks, which will enable the development of specific commercial products.

Cristóbal, SEAT’s safest car

The agreement between both companies also includes the study and validation by MAPFRE of the functionalities of SEAT’s safest car, the Cristóbal concept. This prototype includes 16 Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) functions, which enhance safety while driving and thus minimise the risk of suffering an accident. In this sense, the collaboration focuses on the validation by MAPFRE of the operation of the ADAS features and their impact on reducing accidents and insurance costs.

Committed to developing the ‘connected car’

Within the framework of this agreement and in the context of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), both companies also undertake to analyse the possibility of carrying out projects related with the ‘connected car’ by sharing knowledge and experience, with the aim of analysing the potential offered by the data provided by this type of vehicle for the creation of products adapted to end users, both on the basis of driving patterns and their impact on the accident rate, and on pay-per-use products.
